Welcome to the 6th grade webpage for Ms. Binkowski, and Mr. Griffin!
Parents thank you for your support! The start of the school year while it has had a few bumps, has gotten off really well! It has been a real pleasure getting to know your children and some of you! We really look forward to continuing to build strong, respectable, caring relationships this year! Below I have kept the copy of our welcome letter in case you need any information! If you have not joined Class Dojo Please do so, as this is the way most communication will happen as well as a location for all school announcements. We have also added a copy of the schedule we will be following this year to the Learning Information page. As always please let us know if there is anything we can do for you!
Greetings Families,
Welcome to the Sixth Grade and a new academic year at East Rock School. We are anticipating an excellent and successful year, with many enjoyable and hands-on activities planned across the curriculum.
Classroom Expectations
In sixth grade, we will establish, as a grade, our own set of classroom rules and expectations. Students will be held accountable through our Positive Behavior Interventions and Support System (PBIS). You may track your student’s weekly progress through the ClassDojo App.
A majority of what your student will learn occurs during class time. Studies show that when students are present and engaged in class it increases and maximizes student’s understanding of academic concepts. Please partner with us in ensuring that your child attends school every day. However, in the case that a student is absent, all assignments will be placed in their mail slot and/or posted online to be completed. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange a time to review any missed lessons/assignment in the event of absence(s). In the event of quarantine, we will follow school and district guidelines and work with you and your child to stay current in their learning in class.
Homework Policy
Homework is an important part of your child’s academic development. It is used to reinforce concepts taught during the school day, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. The following homework policy has been put in place as a means of ensuring your child’s academic success:
- Homework accounts for up to 10% of your child’s subject area grade.
- Homework will be given every night, Monday through Thursday, and occasionally on the weekends.
- Independently read 30+ minutes a night, 6 nights a week and complete weekly reading log
Grading Policy
Please familiarize yourself with PowerSchool as all grades and assignments are reported there. Long term assignments and assessments will be posted in PowerSchool as a reminder. Guidance will provide parents and students with sign-in information at the beginning of the school year. All students will be given prior notice to tests or quizzes and when possible.
Communication
It is our wish to keep open lines of communication with each parent/guardian. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us either through a note or a phone call. The school number is 475-220-5900, we will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible. At the start of the school year, we will share our ClassDojo information with you for ease of contact.
Supplies List
In preparation for the 2021-22 school year, most of the classroom assignments will be assigned online. As a result, students will be required to obtain the following list of supplies for 6th grade.
- Three subject notebooks
- Marble type composition book for a journal (bound, no holes)
- Pencils (Students should bring in one pack at a time as needed.)
- Backpack (to safely transport school assigned chromebook)
- Independent reading books to be read at home and in class.
- Masks for every day of the week and a spare mask to bring to school, just in case
- Hand sanitizer (optional)
We look forward to working with our upcoming students and partnering with you. Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Your 6th Grade Team
